Juan Carlos Olivares Pedreno


Professor at the University of Alicante, he obtained his Bachelor Degree in this center, with working stays in the Department of History of London College University and the Archeology Institute of Coimbra University (Portugal). His doctoral thesis (2000), devoted to the study of ancient cults in Roman Hispania, many of them related to water, became a published book in 2002. Since then, he has authored several books and articles studying not only the different cults registered in this territory but also the migrations and interactions between them.

Although Revve can be considered as a paradigmatic figure within the cults of  water, the number of deities within this tradition is enormous, wide spread all over the European continent, with pre-roman cultures like Celtic merging their beliefs with the Greek-Latin pantheon. Names like Apollo and Artemis/Diana appear again and again in different titles, usually linked to the place of devotion: gods of rivers, of fountains, of hot springs, gods that heal wounds and diseases...
